Every time Elon Musk claims that something revolutionary is coming soon, we can only believe in the word "revolutionary" because Musk likes to delay the release date. But can we complain about not meeting deadlines when it comes to a discovery so brilliant. We can only wait breathlessly for more news and ponder how the advent of robots will affect our reality. Some will say that we are on the threshold of a better life, and some will say that robots will one day subjugate humanity. Either way, Elon Musk is definitely the "Iron Man" of our time and each of his new inventions is a confident step into the future.
Tesla engineers are working not only on cars and batteries. The company wants to develop the first mass-produced robotic assistant. This humanoid robot, dubbed Optimus, will utilize numerous synergies from the automaker's most advanced technologies. The first experimental version of the robot clearly left a lot to be desired, but the V2 is already starting to look more like the original dream.
Whether it's the overall design or especially the integrated assembly, Optimus Gen2 looks much more like the "Tesla bot" that Elon Musk has been selling from the beginning, where the first generation rather gave the concept a somewhat ridiculous size.
Already presented to shareholders a few weeks ago, the project is now clearly making an impression, and we can now imagine Elon Musk eventually selling a few tens of millions of units.
Despite the addition of panels hiding the internal components, the Optimus Gen 2 is 10 kg lighter than previous prototypes. Another huge advancement: while the prototypes Tesla presented to us earlier could barely walk, the new iteration is capable of walking "30% faster."
Don't take this figure literally: it's important to remember that Optimus' ability to walk is now enough to really appreciate the utility of this robot in everyday life.
One of the most significant improvements to the new generation of Optimus is the addition of particularly advanced hands. Not only do they have ten fingers, but they have 14 phalanges, just like a human's. What's more, their inner surface is covered with high-definition pressure sensors.
As a result, Optimus can accurately detect which part of an object is in contact with the fingers and how much pressure is applied to it. Combined with object detection, this feature dynamically adjusts the pressure based on the fragility of the object being gripped. In the demo, Optimus can be seen delicately gripping eggs without accidentally breaking them.
We all remember the questionable sense of balance of previous versions of Optimus. Now that problem seems to be a thing of the past. In the demo, Optimus even performs a series of bends without losing his balance once. Again, this is a huge step forward, making the robot more reliable for the mass market.
According to Elon Musk, these robots should make up the bulk of Tesla's brand value within a few years of their commercial launch. The entrepreneur expects to sell a total of 10 to 20 billion robots.
As we can see with each new news, the Optimus robot becomes more and more functional and amazes with its new skills and abilities, which can't help but fuel interest in what's to come. Unfortunately, the exact date and time of the new update is hard to predict. The only thing we know about Optimus is that 2024 was the year of new tests for it, based on this information we can conclude that maybe in the near future we will hear about this amazing future technology again.
